Survey Shows Real Picture of “Typical” Cosmetic Surgery Patient
The average patient at a private cosmetic surgery practice is a married, college educated, working mother – according to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.
Doctors from the Advanced Skin Research Center in Omaha surveyed hundreds of patients who visited a private dermatological practice for cosmetic treatments like Botox, injectable fillers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatment.
The authors sought to obtain data on patient demographics in order to challenge common assumptions about the “typical cosmetic surgery patient.” To meet this goal, they designed a questionnaire to obtain patient information in categories such as:
- Age
- Gender
- Partner’s age
- Marital status
- Employment
- Education
- Reason for procedure
After receiving 336 of the 400 surveys completed, the doctors found that more than 95% of patients were female, about 67 % were married and college-educated, and 74% were employed.
One unique aspect of the study was the age comparison of patients to their partners. Patients typically fell into two categories: older and younger than their significant other, while much smaller group of patients said they were the same age as their partners.
