How does laser hair removal work?
The problem with short-term hair removal methods like shaving and waxing is that they have no real effect on the hair follicle. They get rid of the existing hair, but in a few weeks a new one grows back to take its place—and the cycle continues. Laser hair removal can help to break that cycle by damaging the hair follicle, which disrupts the hair growth cycle and prevents new hair from growing back in the treated area.
- Key Benefits
- Glossary
- Long-Term Hair Reduction: Laser hair removal can significantly reduce hair growth over time, with many experiencing long-lasting results.
- Precision: The laser targets dark pigment in the hair follicles, leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
- Speed: Each laser pulse takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. Small areas, like the upper lip, can be treated in less than a minute, and larger areas, such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour.
- Reduced Ingrown Hairs: Unlike shaving or waxing, laser hair removal reduces the chance of ingrown hairs.
- Smoother Skin: The skin becomes smoother compared to other hair removal methods that can leave stubble or bumps.
- Cost-Effective in the Long Run: While there’s an upfront cost, laser hair removal can be cost-effective compared to a lifetime of waxing, shaving supplies, and depilatory creams.
- Convenience: It eliminates the need for daily shaving or regular waxing appointments.
- Minimal Side Effects: Most people experience few side effects, and those that do occur are typically minor and short-lived.
- Pain Reduction: Many find laser hair removal less painful than waxing, especially in sensitive areas.
- Saves Time: Reduces the time spent on traditional hair removal routines.
- Diode Laser: A laser type suitable for most skin tones, popular in laser hair removal for its effectiveness on coarse hair.
- Follicle: The small cavity in the skin where hair grows from. Laser hair removal targets the follicles to reduce hair growth.
- Hair Cycle: Refers to the stages of hair growth, including the anagen (growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting) phases. Laser hair removal is most effective during the anagen phase.
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): Not a laser, but a light-based therapy used for hair removal. It uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths.
- Laser Hair Removal: A cosmetic procedure that uses laser technology to remove unwanted hair by targeting the melanin in hair follicles.
- Melanin: The pigment in hair and skin. Lasers target melanin in the hair follicle to remove hair.
- Nd:YAG Laser: A laser type with a longer wavelength, making it suitable for darker skin tones, as it can target hair follicles without affecting the surrounding skin.
- Photoepilation: Another term for laser hair removal, referring to the use of light-based therapies to remove hair.
- Pigment: The natural coloring in the skin and hair. In laser hair removal, the laser targets the pigment in the hair.
- Skin Type: Classification of skin based on its reaction to sun exposure and other factors. It’s an important consideration in selecting the appropriate laser for hair removal.
- Thermolysis: The process of destroying hair follicles through heat generated by laser energy.

How much does laser hair removal cost in Las Vegas?
At Cosmetic Surgery of Las Vegas, prices start at $25 to $300 per treatment. Your total price for laser hair removal depends on the size and location of the treatment area, as well as how many treatments are needed for full hair removal. We offer convenient financing options as well as packages to help you enjoy the most cost-effective treatments.
What does laser hair removal feel like?
During treatment, our aesthetician applies a cooling gel to the treatment areas. Next, the laser wand is applied over the gel. The relatively wide 810-diode laser diameter and rapid succession of laser pulses deliver optimal laser energy to impair the hair follicle during a relatively short treatment time. The sensation experienced can be compared to a mild, brief “snap” as the laser is applied. Most patients find this very tolerable. Total treatment time can take 15 to 45 minutes or more, depending on the size of the treatment area.
How many treatments will I need to remove all the hair?
The hair follicle needs to be in the active growth phase of the cycle for the laser to work. Since different hair follicles in an area are in growth phases at different times, laser hair removal is typically performed in a series of treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, to produce the most thorough reduction of hair in an area. The exact number of treatments you may need depends on the thickness and density of the hair, the size and location of the area being treated, and your personal goals and anatomy. Typically, about 4 to 8 treatments are the norm.
How soon will I see laser hair removal results?
Following each treatment in a series, you will notice less hair growing back in an area, and the hair that does regrow is often finer and softer than before. When you have completed the desired number of treatments, skin will be smoother and free of unwanted hair. While certain things may make hair grow back in an area eventually, including certain medications, hormone fluctuations, or other conditions, the typical patient enjoys many years of hair-free skin.
